Understanding Hotel Cancellation Policies: Free Cancellation, Deadlines, and Refunds
Flexible or non-refundable? Learn how to read hotel cancellation policies correctly, spot the deadlines, and get your money back after a cancellation.
Cancellation policies determine whether a hotel booking stays a good deal when your plans change. Here are the key terms and rules at a glance.
The three standard rate types
- Free cancellation: You can cancel at no charge up to a set deadline - often 24 to 72 hours before arrival, or 7 to 14 days for resorts. After that, you're typically charged for the first night or the full amount.
- Partially refundable: A fee applies when you cancel - for example, one night's stay - and the remainder is refunded.
- Non-refundable: The rate is lower, but there's no refund if you cancel. Only worth it when you're certain the trip is happening.
What to watch out for with deadlines
Deadlines almost always refer to the hotel's local time and the check-in date. "Up to 2 days before arrival" for a check-in on the 10th typically means by midnight on the 8th, sometimes by 6:00 PM. On 2Travel, we display the exact deadline with the date and time on the booking page, so you don't have to do the math.
How to cancel the right way
Always cancel through the same channel you used to book - on 2Travel, go straight to your booking's detail page and cancel with a single click. You'll receive a confirmation by email right away. Canceling by phone with the hotel alone is risky, because it won't be registered with the booking partner.
Refunds: When will the money come back?
The refund is automatically returned to the original payment method. Depending on your bank, this usually takes 5 to 10 business days; for credit cards, the amount often doesn't appear until your next statement.
Booked non-refundable - now what?
Try asking the hotel nicely about moving your reservation to a different date. Many properties are flexible, especially outside peak season. Through 2Travel's live chat, we'll forward your request directly to the accommodation and get back to you with their response.
